I’ve written plenty of book reviews, so why not try a little music review? This time, though, it’s a pretty objective one.

I love live music, I really I do. But I don’t really like German music. And normally I don’t have exceptions to rules. But… well… here’s one: If you ever get your hands on Herbert Grönemeyer’s “Mensch” live DVD, I strongly recommend listening to “Zum Meer” from that DVD. The studio version of the song is nice, too, but it can’t be compared to the live version, for one reason in particular: before he starts, he says something which pretty much reflects my attitude:

Ein Lied was sich beschäftigt mit Zukunft,
mit Optimismus, mit Zuversicht,
dass man seine Vergangenheit nicht vergessen soll
aber dennoch seinen Frieden schliessen
und sich nach vorne bewegen
sich an sich selber freuen

I love the part where the strings start with the refrain (”Dreh dich um…”, turn up the volume!) and I love how the mood of the song changes - an initially strong upwind turns and finally brings one to his or her destination - and eventually ends with:

Geh gelöst, versöhnt, bestärkt,
selbstbefreit den Weg zum Meer

Now let’s see what the summer brings.
